As one of the most talented students at the Fine Art School of Art and Design in Bratislava, Pavol is the winner of two major awards from the year 2011: Award of the Budapest gallery and auction house Arte from the XXVth Triennial of contemporary graphic art in Miškolc and the art critic award from the XVIIth Triennial of Slovak contemporary graphic art in Banská Bystrica. The exhibition „Uroboros“ is the first solo exhibition of the woks of Pavol Truben in Slovakia, within which his newest series of prints, named Antropometria will be displayed. The older works of Pavol Truben are introspective and inspired by the author’s reminiscences and adventures. The series Limity tela reflects a period when Pavol found himself in a physically and mentally challenging situation and while overcoming the hardship connected with these times he stumbled upon limitations imposed by his own body. Through the body as an object, the author reflects the themes of sex and sexuality, temptation and pleasure. Gradually, Pavol abandons subjective themes and focuses on global conflicts instead; from political to religious and racial problems. The series Uroboros uses the metaphor of an insect, devouring itself, in order to capture the never-ending cycle of life, the coming of the full circle of eternal origin and demise. The metaphor is applied to third world countries, whose inhabitants find themselves daily balancing on the fragile boarderline between life and death. In his following works Pavol utilises the strategy of layering, intersecting and mystificating information. The pieces become more sophisticated and challenging to the attention of his audience. For example, the cycle Neviditeľné úmrtia (invisible deaths), in which he overlaps fiction and fact reacting on armed conflicts of the year 2009. The author plays with the (in)sensitivity of people and the measure of their „attentiveness“ in a world which is being supplied with massive quantities of information every second by its media. Pavol Truben creates his own interpretative cartography by means of his work, whose contour lines navigate us towards the exploration of the individual sediments of its content. This applies equally in his workMalý slovník cudzích slov (small dictionary of foreign words).The author offers an interpretation of concepts from world journalism here, such as: xenophobia, usurpation, persecution etc. The first layer of the piece offers us a description of the term complimented by a medieval style illustration. As the illustration is overlayed by milky glass, the author seems to be, again, testing the degree of human attention and our willingness to plow through to information. The second layer works only in complete darkness, when a text appears under a UV lamp, capturing the same expression in the context of current events. The author addresses racial and ethnic problems in his newest cycleAntropometria. Here, he explores the creation of artificial ethnic barriers during the colonisation process, which signifies hatred along class, race and ethnic lines. Pavol thus uncovers the facets of this hatred in a post-colonial, hybrid world, in which barriers are blurred and smudged similarily to the portraits represented in this cycle.
